Exposure to Asbestos
Do you think you may have been exposed to asbestos at work?
All ASLEF members who may have been exposed, particularly those who have worked on steam engines, are asked to complete the Thompsons asbestos exposure questionnaire. This will help us to gather as much information as possible on this issue, and help with any claims for compensation.
Members who may have been exposed should call 0808 100 80 09 and ask to be sent an ASLEF asbestos questionnaire. Once completed this should be returned to the Thompsons address at the top of the form.
Members who may have been affected should also tell their GP, to make sure the incident is on their medical records in the unlikely event of anything going wrong in the future. Not everyone who has been exposed to asbestos will develop an asbestos-related disease, but it can take 20-40 years for such diseases to develop. As a precaution, it is advisable to avoid any unnecessary exposure to x-rays.
If you have any questions about the asbestos exposure register, or asbestos issues in the workplace, please contact the ASLEF Health and Safety department at health&safety@aslef.org.uk or 020 7324 2400.
