Safety must come first to ease lockdown

General Secretary Mick Whelan's comments on the Prime Minister's speech this evening (10th May 2020).

Mick said: ‘Whilst we welcome the continued measures to retain the lockdown, and the request that the public refrain from using public transport, with no clear guidance on the staggering of starting and finishing times in either construction or manufacturing, we are concerned that social distancing will not be maintained.

'The message around unlimited exercise, and the self-policing of it will make it now impossible to differentiate between those travelling as key workers and in those areas where return to work has been encouraged, and those who are not.

'Rightly, social distancing limits capacity on public transport and, if we believe that staff or public are being put at risk, we will not hesitate to ensure all are protected.’
