The government, on Tuesday 18 May, only extended funding for Transport for London until tomorrow [Friday 28 May]. A short-term extension that only created uncertainty for passengers, staff, and businesses in the capital. An announcement is expected before the Bank Holiday weekend and ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, issued this warning to the Department for Transport which appears to be playing politics with the London Mayor, London Underground staff, and travellers on the Tube in the capital.

Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on the Underground, said: ‘As we wait to hear details of the funding package for TfL, due to be announced tomorrow, ASLEF members on London Underground are determined that they will not pay the price of politically motivated cuts.

‘Whatever the details of the government’s announcement, there is one thing of which I am sure; workers on TfL showed enormous courage, determination, and resilience in keeping services running during the pandemic.

‘They will demonstrate those qualities again if they have to fight to protect their pensions, wages and working conditions.

‘High quality, reliable public transport will be vital to London’s economic recovery. If the government decides to pick a fight with the workers who deliver it, they will be making a serious mistake.’
