AAD 2022: Day 3
Health and Safety
Health and Safety debates took up much of the day, with delegates discussing items including the need for proper mental health support at work; recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic; suitable PPE, and equipment safety.
Stand Up to Racism
Conference also heard from Weyman Bennett, co-convenor of Stand Up to Racism who opened his speech by recognising ASLEF’s longstanding opposition to the far right and our members’ work standing strong against racism.
Weyman received a standing ovation from delegates.
Over the lunch break, he also spoke to delegates and visitors at a fringe event hosted by BAME Representative Committee Chair San Senik.
Trade unions are at the heart of the fight against racism and fascism and ASLEF is proud to be involved in this work.
Solidarity with Abdullah Öcalan
Delegates took a photograph today to show ASLEF's solidarity with Abdullah Öcalan and the Kurdish people. Öcalan, the Kurdish leader, has been imprisoned since 1999. Find out more about the campaign here.
ASLEF is also proud to extend international solidarity campaigners in Cuba fighting against the blockade, an end to the US occupation of Guantanamo Bay and for the Cuban people's right to be free from foreign intervention. Conference welcomed Rob Miller, Director of Cuba Solidarity Campaign, to address conference today about the organisation’s work.
35 Year Badge
Simon Weller, Assistant General Secretary, was also presented with his 35 year ASLEF membership badge today by the General Secretary.
